The East Riding of Yorkshire village of Skirlaugh lies in the Holderness district of the county. It is located just 7 miles north east of Hull and once had its own railway station on the Hull and Hornsea line. Prior to the railway opening in 1864 the village held its own race meeting which took place on Wednesday 20th March 1861. The course was across four miles of fields on the outer edge of the village and the card opened with the Hunters’ Stakes over 4 miles which saw Fred, owned by Mr Harland, get the better of Mr Nicholson’s Sharper. The feature, concluding race of the day was the Skirlaugh Stakes over 3 miles which went to Wild Drake. Despite the large crowd and obvious success of the event, no further meetings were recorded. |
